I recently turned 16, and I wanted to do something pertaining to my platform instead of a normal birthday party. On March 7th, I had a fundraiser party to celebrate my birthday. I used this to be of value to foster children, instead of receiving presents for myself. My friends and I spent many hours making 16 tie blankets in honor of my 16th birthday. I also had them bring something that they thought a child between the ages of 0-4 would enjoy. This kept it focused in on one age group instead of having it scattered around. There was also a huge donation of stuffed animals that were all very adorable. I had a great time sharing my life of foster care with my friends, while also giving back to foster children and their families. Everyone was excited to help out, and I’m still getting donations given to me! After all the fun had ended and everyone went home, I paired each blanket with a stuffed animal and extra piece (a rattle, nuk, pillow etc.). Because so many children come into homes with little to nothing, I hope these soft articles will help heal the hardness in their hearts. A big word that comes into play is security. I have seen a blanket provide a lot of security for children, and a little something to go beyond that will help them feel safe and secure. Foster children can be afraid at first, but I want them to know that they are now in a safe place.
